Germany: TOP 10 Energy Companies with Highest Sales

According to our database (as of March 2023), a total of more than 5.3M businesses operate in Germany. Only 3.5% of them (over 186 thousand) operate in Transportation, Communications, Electric, Gas, and Sanitary Services. These companies generate sales of EUR 1.64T a year, which is 13.6% of the total sales generated by all businesses registered in Germany. The TOP 10 energy companies in Germany generated more than EUR 348B in sales in 2021 - the largest company, Uniper SE, was responsible for 47% of the total. All data used below is available in individual companies’ annual reports.

Uniper SE had the highest sales in 2021

E.ON SE was second with EUR 77.4B in sales. It is one of the largest electric utility companies in Europe which focuses on renewable energy, energy networks, and customer solutions. E.ON SE operates in over 30 countries and has over 50 million customers.

EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG was third with EUR 32.7B in sales in 2021. The company focuses on renewable energy, energy networks, and energy-related services and operates in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland.

RWE AG was fourth with EUR 24.5B in sales. This multinational energy company operates in the electricity generation, transmission, and distribution sectors. It is one of the largest electricity producers in Europe and has a strong focus on renewable energy.

Amprion GmbH was fifth with sales of EUR 12.5B in 2021. The company is a transmission system operator responsible for the network in the west and south-west of Germany.

TransnetBW GmbH was sixth with EUR 9B in sales. TransnetBW is another transmission system operator in Germany, responsible for a large part of the network in the state of Baden-Württemberg.

Stadtwerke München GmbH was seventh with EUR 8.3B in sales in 2021. This company provides electricity, gas, water, and public transportation services in the city of Munich.

50Hertz Transmission GmbH was eighth with sales of almost EUR 7.9B. The company is a German transmission system operator. Its transmission system is located in the north and east of the country.
